Ashmore Collection of American Glass to be Auctioned

The nationally known collection of the late R.H. "Bud" Ashmore will be sold by Dan Ripley's Antique Helper Auctions. Bud was a well known collector of American Iridescent Stretch Glass, Tiffin, Northwood, Fenton, Fostoria, Imperial and other American Glassware and from the Art Deco and Depression Eras and Lenox porcelain. Highlights include Stretch Glass in Red, Tangerine and Wisteria; many Stretch and Opaque Glass Candlesticks and console sets; Victorian and Elegant Glassware; Tiffin Vaseline fishbowls and bases and Millersburg crystal, Ohio Star and Hobstar and Feather.
Bud was a longtime member of many glass clubs including the Stretch Glass society and the Hoosier Glass and Pottery Club. Many pieces of his glass were featured in books on Northwood and Imperial. This is one of the most desired collections of American Glassware to come up in recent years.

More of the glass has been unpacked and even as a long time dealer, I'm amazed at what Bud had. the pieces of Red Stretch are killer. Highlight is a ruffled and crimped punch bowl plus 10 other pieces. Lots of US opaques in all colors. Six boxes of Beaumont, three boxes of Northwood purple slag mosaic from 1903 and a large selection of Millersburg crystal in Ohio Star, Hobstar and Feather and Country Kitchen inc. 3 pieces of Carnival. Many more boxes to go through today. Do not miss this auction if you are a collector or even a glass lover. you will not see a collection like this again.

As an appraiser, I see many collections of glass. Bud's, however, is the most diverse and outstanding collection I have seen in 20 years. It is nationally-significant. This auction would be a great opportunity to buy for wedding, anniversary, birthday, graduation gifts!

How good is this glass collection? Being a dealer in American glassware and a 15 year friend of Bud, I can say without reservation that this is one of the best collections I have seen and one of the best to come on the market in a number of years. Bud never sold anything. This collection is fresh to the market. I can tell you that I'm out hunting glass every day across the Midwest and the Ohio Valley and I am lucky if I see some of these pieces once every five or ten years or not at all. The four pictures on the website as of the 13th are just a small percentage of what you would call the "killer" pieces of Bud's collection. Stay tuned for more information as more boxes arrive and are unpacked.

More thoughts about Bud and his collection Here's a question collector's may not think about. Why do you collect? A good friend did a seminar at the Fenton Convention one year entitled How to Collect. Some of the pre seminar comments were: what can he possibly talk about, why should I go and it doesn't sound interesting. I told people to just go and listen. They were glad they did. Besides the obvious reasons to collect being your not being about to help yourself, being addicted to the hunt and appreciating the artistry of the glass, one of the most important reasons should be to learn. That was Bud Ashmore. A classy gentleman who appreciated the artistry of the glass and porcelain and was always finding that new or rare piece and learning what it was. Bud had a thirst for knowledge and was only happy to share that with other collectors. More than that, collectors like Bud are preservationists. Saving pieces of the history for others to enjoy and appreciate. Bud also knew what a lo
