Occupational Shaving Mugs, Stevengraphs at auction

Antique Helper Auctions is proud to announce the sale of an important collection of antique occupational shaving mugs. These prominent collections were amassed over a number of years by a New York couple, now residing in Indiana.

Predominently used during the late nineteeth century and into the early twentieth century, individual gentlemen each would utilize their own mug at the barber shop. Each mug was initially marked to identify the owner, usually by name, and then frequently decorated with iconography representing the customer’s occupation or a symbol of their identity. These images were each unique, in that they were typically hand painted by a local artist. Varying degrees of quality and aesthetic create a collectible genre that appeals to an audience of collectors which pursues examples based on occupational or artistic merit.
The collections will include many examples of railroadiana, equestrian activities, photography, baseball, tailoring, blacksmithing, boxing, breweriana and other activities.
This auction will take place in Indianapolis on Friday July 24th, 2009 in a special session that will also include a rare Stevengraph collection, and Victorian barber bottles. The sale starts at 4pm ET. Online catalogs will be available at antiquehelper.com, artfact.com, invaluable.com and auctionzip.com. More information is available by calling Antique Helper at 317-251-5635
