Original James Dean Oil Painting Road to Happiness

Estimate: $25000 - $50000
Realized: $0

Original James Dean Oil Painting, "Road to Happiness". 18" x 24". There are only three oil paintings by James Dean known to exist. One of the paintings hangs in Dave Loehr's James Dean Gallery in Indiana, one is missing and the other is offered here. The painting is oil on stretched canvas and it is in excellent condition except for a very small nail hole (pictured) in the upper right of the painting. The painting will come with a letter of authenticity from Dean archivist David Loehr. Provenance of painting has been outlined on the back of the canvas by previous owners.

Rose "Zori" Harberger's story of how she came to own one of three oil paintings by James Dean begins in California, 1954. Pat Jordan, Hollywood hairdresser, knew James. James gave Pat the painting.

Lion Model, a New York tailor of couture high fashion for ladies, got the painting from Pat in 1962. Pat told Lion that James Dean painted "The Road To Happiness".

Lion, pleased with his painting, hung it in his home for all to see. Ralph Harberger, Zori's husband, was a vendor who sold high couture fabric to Lion. They were friends. He and Zori were frequent guests to tea at Lion's house. Zori always said she loved the painting.

When Lion died, he left the painting to Zori and Ralph. They have owned it since.
