Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Robert Reid was an African-American painter and art educator. He was an instructor of painting at the Summit Art Center in New Jersey from 1970 to 1971and in 1970, a Professor of Drawing at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Reid was a student at Clark College from 1941 to 1943, and studied for the next three years at the Art Institute of Design. From 1948 to 1950, he was at the Parson School of Design. Exhibition venues include the Grand Central Art Gallery in New York City; the 1st World Festival of Negro Artists, Dakar, Senegal, 1965; UCLA Art Galleries, 1966; Arts in the American Embassies State Department Program, 1967; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Studio Museum Harlem, 1968-69; American Academy of Arts & Letters, 1967-1969 (Childe Hassam Purchase Award); the Whitney Museum of American Art and the United States Information Service in Washington DC., 1971.
His work is in the collections of Myers College, Birmingham, Alabama; Museum of African Art in Washington, DC; the Laura Musser Museum, Muscatine, Iowa; the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana; Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; Newark Museum; Syracuse University; University of Pennsylvania; and Drew University.
