HOOKS PHARMACEUTICAL AUCTION BRINGS A HAPPY CROWD
On November 17, 2007, Antique Helper offered items from the Hooks Drug Store and Pharmaceutical Collection. This very special sale had items with a broad appeal. Offerings included classic pharmaceutical collectibles, furniture, advertising, and plenty of surprises. Bidders included serious collectors of pharmaceutical and advertising memorabilia, eager to own a bit of Indiana history, as well as quirky newcomers, amused by the prospect of owning a genuine pharmacy bottled labeled “Essence of Hound’s Tongue Leaf” or, more menacingly: ARSENIC.
Headliners included vintage signs and paramedical advertising pieces that had collectors clamoring for more. These vintage advertising items saw impressive bidding. A vintage Coca Cola holiday advertising sign of painted wood with tin icicles (Est. $250-$450) turned up the heat, going to a telephone bidder for $998.75, including buyer’s premium.* Later, an Unguentine Lotion advertising poster by Hayden C. Hayden (American, 1885), more than tripled its high estimate of $200, bringing $793.13 from a telephone bidder.
Larger antique store cabinets, cases and counters were the focus at the end of the cataloged portion of the sale. Two stained glass soda fountain bar backs sold for $1,687.50 and $2,250, respectively. Large vintage store cabinets found new life in an out of state home restoration.
But it was the boxes of curious remedies, ointments and quackery cures offered as part of the discovery auction that held the crowd through the sale’s end. Floor bidders, some being first time auction goers, found themselves caught up in the fun of a true discovery sale. Treasures included sundae glasses, medicine bottles, vintage store packaging and display items. Antique dealers, artists and collectors all happily found themselves laden with the fruits of their labors.
The Hooks Auction event was a point of pride for Antique Helper staff. “Considering Hooks’ strong ties to Indianapolis and Indiana history, it was an honor to have been asked to hold this auction at Antique Helper,” says House Auctioneer DeWayne Butler.
